Volkswagen’s Next Small SUV Looks Sharp, But Don’t Expect It in the U.S.

Volkswagen’s Next Small SUV Looks Sharp, But Don’t Expect It in the U.S.

Volkswagen is quietly developing a new version of its Nivus subcompact SUV, a model that has won fans in Latin America for its affordable price and sleek coupe-like shape. Recent spy shots show a heavily disguised prototype that looks ready for production, but the real updates are hiding underneath the body panels.

A quick refresher: The Nivus is essentially the budget-friendly sibling of the VW Taigo, and while it’s a hit south of the border, it remains one of those models American drivers will have to admire from afar.

Under the skin, the next Nivus is expected to move to Volkswagen’s updated MQB Evo platform, ditching the older MQB A0 architecture used in the current version. Spy photographers noticed that the prototype’s Taigo bodywork is held together with rivets in places, hinting that the front-end geometry has been tweaked and that the vehicle is slightly wider and longer than the outgoing model.

That shift could give the new Nivus a more planted stance and room for bigger hybrid components.

Styling could borrow heavily from the latest VW T-Roc, meaning a more modern face with intricate lighting, a fresh grille, and new air intakes. The sleek roofline and rear window should carry over, keeping the sporty profile. Inside, expect a big leap forward: The current model’s center-dash infotainment screen will likely be replaced by a freestanding display, following the trend seen in the 2026 T-Roc and other recent VW models.
