Volkswagen Swaps Gas Mowers for 100 Sheep at Polish Factory

While some automakers are investing in robotic security dogs, Volkswagen has taken a decidedly low-tech approach to lawn maintenance. The carmaker has replaced its gasoline-powered mowers with 100 sheep at its manufacturing plant in Poznań, Poland. The flock now handles vegetation management across the facility, grazing naturally between rows of solar panels.

The sheep arrived just in time for the growing season and will keep the grass trimmed through autumn. 3 megawatt solar installation. On sunny days, the array can power the entire factory, and it covers roughly a quarter of the plant’s annual electricity needs.

Beyond the novelty, there’s real science at work. Volkswagen has teamed up with researchers from Poznań University of Life Sciences to study how the sheep affect biodiversity, soil health, vegetation, and animal welfare. They’re also looking at whether the shade from the solar panels reduces heat stress for the animals.

The approach, known as agrivoltaics, is gaining traction as companies look for ways to make renewable energy projects more than just power generators. If grazing livestock can cut maintenance costs and boost biodiversity, it’s a win for everyone.
