Volkswagen Owner Blames Free Update for $1,600 Repair Shock

Volkswagen Owner Blames Free Update for $1,600 Repair Shock

When Volkswagen rolled out over-the-air software updates, the promise was simple: your car gets better over time. For many drivers, that’s been true. But one Jetta owner says his experience went the opposite direction, and it’s costing him. Asher Koreman of Cincinnati claims a routine OTA update left his 2021 Volkswagen Jetta flooded with error messages and missing key features.

The automaker hasn’t linked the update to the problems, but Koreman is stuck with a repair bill approaching $1,600.

According to local station WKRC, Koreman says his car prompted him to install the update last month. He chose the free over-the-air option instead of paying a dealer. After restarting, he says warning lights lit up across the digital dash. Functions like lane departure warnings, backup alerts, parts of the infotainment system, and even the oil temperature display stopped working.

The dealer quoted roughly $200 for diagnostics and another $1,400 for repairs, claiming the issue was a pre-existing condition not covered under warranty. Koreman took the car home and tried a hard battery reset, which restored some features but not all.

Volkswagen declined to comment on Koreman’s specific case but issued a statement encouraging customers to contact their Customer Care team for support. Whether the update caused the failures or simply exposed an existing problem remains unclear. For Koreman, the timing is hard to ignore, and the lack of a clear answer from VW leaves him with a big question and an even bigger bill.
