Used Mercedes-AMG GLS 63: A Three-Row Family SUV That Outperforms a New Tahoe for Less

Used Mercedes-AMG GLS 63: A Three-Row Family SUV That Outperforms a New Tahoe for Less

For families needing more space, a three-row SUV often means settling for something practical. But on the used market, a 2019 Mercedes-AMG GLS 63 offers a far more exciting option than a new entry-level Chevrolet Tahoe, and for similar money.

5-liter twin-turbo V8 producing 577 horsepower and 561 lb-ft of torque. That's a massive jump from the base Tahoe's 355-horsepower V8. 5 seconds, compared to around seven seconds for the Chevy. It also includes AMG-tuned air suspension, adaptive damping, a tweaked seven-speed automatic, and Mercedes' 4Matic all-wheel drive for traction.

On the outside, the GLS 63 stands out with 21-inch AMG wheels, a full AMG body kit, and flared arches. Inside, it offers heated and ventilated Nappa leather seats with massage function, heated middle-row seats, tri-zone climate control, ambient lighting, a panoramic roof, and a Harman Kardon audio system.

The 2019 model, the last of the second generation, adds a 360-degree camera and Active Parking Assist. By contrast, the base Tahoe comes with cloth seats that aren't even heated.

Depreciation makes the AMG surprisingly affordable. A 2019 GLS 63 originally cost $126,150, but average values for 2018-2019 examples now sit just above $37,000. With a $50,000 budget, you can find one in excellent condition with around 40,000 miles; $60,000 gets a near-pristine example with 20,000 miles.

Higher-mileage cars (60,000-70,000 miles) can be found for closer to $40,000.

However, running costs are steep. The V8 averages only 15 MPG. Known issues include cylinder-lining scoring that can lead to engine failure, with replacement engines costing over $40,000. Coolant and oil leaks are common, major services can exceed $2,000, and the Airmatic suspension, brakes, and tires add thousands more.

Expect to spend upwards of $3,000 per year on maintenance if no major problems arise. Still, for those who can handle the costs, the GLS 63 delivers exceptional performance and luxury for the price of a base Tahoe.
