Ultra-Rare 1965 Shelby GT350R With Original Sheet Metal Heads to Auction

Most 1960s race cars endured crashes, repairs, and heavy modifications during their working lives. That was their purpose. But one 1965 Shelby GT350R stands apart as what many consider the most original and best-preserved factory example in existence. Apart from cosmetic restoration, it reportedly remains very close to how Shelby American originally delivered it.
The Wimbledon White fastback offers collectors a rare glimpse into what it was like to discover a fresh Shelby race car in 1965.
Shelby built only 36 factory GT350R models, transforming the standard Mustang into a purpose-built SCCA B-Production racer. These cars came from the same team behind the Cobra, Daytona Coupe, and Ford GT40. Under the hood sits a 289-cubic-inch V8 with a four-speed manual transmission.
The exterior features classic blue stripes, while the black cabin includes only racing essentials. The GT350R proved highly effective in competition and helped establish the Mustang's racing reputation.
The most remarkable detail is that this car reportedly retains 100 percent of its original sheet metal. Shelby expert Bob Perkins noted it was the only GT350R he had inspected with completely original panels. Its history is fully documented from Shelby American through the original owner to today, including original paperwork and period racing photos.
Before restoration, the car was photographed extensively in its original paint and factory markings, with the restoration process also recorded. This example now serves as a reference for authenticating other R-Models and earned Concours Gold Certification at the Muscle Car and Corvette Nationals.
This rare 1965 Shelby GT350R will cross the block at Mecum Kissimmee on Friday, January 15, 2027. With only 36 built new, finding one this complete and original is like discovering a veteran fighter who retired without a scar.
