Ultra-Rare 1956 Corvette SR-1 Heads to Auction, a Survivor of the Program That Saved America's Sports Car

Ultra-Rare 1956 Corvette SR-1 Heads to Auction, a Survivor of the Program That Saved America's Sports Car

In the mid-1950s, the Corvette’s future was far from certain. Chevrolet’s fiberglass two-seater looked great, but it still had to prove it was more than a stylish cruiser. A tiny group of factory-built Corvettes helped change that, pulling the model into the world of motorsports.

One of those historically important cars has survived, complete with documentation, and is now set to cross the auction block.

Chevrolet built just six SR-optioned Corvettes in June 1956. This particular example is reportedly one of only two known survivors. It was not one of the competition cars that raced at the 1956 12 Hours of Sebring. Instead, it was one of six production Corvettes assembled in St.

Louis with 13 special SR-1 options. The package grew from Chevrolet’s early racing efforts and helped establish hardware later offered through the RPO 684 and 687 competition packages between 1957 and 1962.

The SR program added upgraded brakes, cooling hardware, suspension components, and other performance-focused equipment. Racing had already shown the Corvette’s potential, with John Fitch and Walt Hansgen taking a specially prepared example to ninth overall and first in its class at Sebring.

Zora Arkus-Duntov believed racing could give the Corvette the credibility it needed, and the SR cars helped turn that vision into something tangible. Without experiments like the SR-1, we might never have received the fuel-injected C1, the big-block Sting Rays, the ZR1, or the modern Z06.

This particular car was delivered to Dick Doane Chevrolet in East Dundee, Illinois, alongside four other SR-optioned Corvettes. Frank C. Carr purchased it new and reportedly campaigned it around Chicago, including an appearance in the 1957 Lake Michigan Miglia. It was pictured in Corvette News coverage of that event.

After several owners, Larry Martin acquired the Corvette in 1998 while it remained in highly original condition. Specialists Dick Robinson and Jim Keegan completed a comprehensive restoration between 1998 and 2000, restoring it alongside the only other known SR-1. 9 points for an NCRS Top Flight award in 2011.

It has since been kept in a climate-controlled collection.

The sale includes a restoration photo album, period ownership correspondence, photographs from its earliest owners, and images signed by John Fitch and Richard “Dick” Thompson. The car has appeared at the National Corvette Museum and the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance.

This 1956 Corvette SR-1 will be offered as Lot R610 at Mecum’s Kissimmee 2027 auction on Friday, January 15. No estimate has been announced. With only two survivors known, it is not just another immaculate C1, it is a surviving piece of the program that helped make the Corvette America’s sports car.
