Toyota’s U.S. Allocation of GR GT Supercar Already Sold Out - On Purpose

If you were hoping to get your hands on one of the first Toyota GR GT supercars bound for the United States, you’re out of luck. All U.S.-bound units are already spoken for, according to a Toyota executive speaking at the Rolex Motorsport Reunion at Laguna Seca.
Toyota Senior Vice President of Automotive Operations Andrew Gilleland said the company set aside 200 to 250 examples of the flagship machine for the American market. He called the limited supply “by design,” describing the GR GT as a passion project driven by Akio Toyoda’s desire for a world-class performance car.
Gilleland added that Toyota wants to avoid selling to flippers and only wants buyers who will actually drive the car. He confirmed the first allocation is sold out but did not reveal global production numbers.
During The Quail event, part of Monterey Car Week, more than 150 potential buyers reportedly sat down with Toyota reps to configure their cars, even though orders weren’t being taken. Gilleland noted the interest is huge.
Development drivers Tatsuya Kataoka and Jack Hawksworth were on hand, emphasizing the road car’s drivability, reliability, and how closely it mirrors the GT3 race version. Kataoka said he hopes people sense the intensity of the development and Toyota’s passion for the project.
The GR GT is expected to reach owners next year, powered by a 4.0-liter twin-turbo hybrid V8 targeting over 640 horsepower, paired with a rear-mounted, triple-wet-clutch, eight-speed transmission.
