Toyota's GR GT First U.S. Allocation Already Spoken For, Company Prioritizes Drivers Over Flippers

Toyota's GR GT First U.S. Allocation Already Spoken For, Company Prioritizes Drivers Over Flippers

Toyota's upcoming GR GT supercar won't be easy to get, even if you have deep pockets. The first batch of cars destined for the U.S. is already sold out, and the company is being highly selective about who gets to buy one.

Speaking to The Drive. Toyota's Senior Vice President of Automotive Operations Andrew Gilleland said the company intentionally won't have enough cars to meet demand. He described the GR GT as a passion project, noting that chairman and former CEO Akio Toyoda wants a world-class performance car.

Gilleland made it clear that Toyota doesn't want to sell to flippers, only to people who will actually drive the car. The first allocation is already sold, he confirmed.

The phrase "first allocation" suggests more batches are planned, so the situation may not be as dire as headlines imply. Still, getting one won't be easy. Only about 200 to 250 cars are expected for the U.S. market, and Toyota appears to be handpicking buyers with a preference for enthusiasts.

0-liter twin-turbo V8 paired with a hybrid electric motor, sending power to the rear through an eight-speed automatic gearbox. It's expected to produce at least 641 horsepower and reach a top speed of 199 mph or faster. The car also uses Toyota's first all-aluminum body frame with carbon elements.

Final pricing hasn't been announced, but earlier reports suggest a starting price around $225,000. In the U.S., the car will be distributed through select Lexus dealerships rather than traditional Toyota showrooms.
