Toyota's $220K GR GT Supercar Already Has Every US Unit Spoken For

Thinking about trading in your GR 86 or Supra for Toyota's new GR GT? If you're in the US, you're already too late. Toyota says every example meant for the American market has been accounted for, even before the order books officially opened.
The US is getting between 200 and 250 units, and Toyota handpicked the buyers. The company admits it's deliberately keeping supply short. Andrew Gilleland, Toyota's senior vice president of Automotive Operations, told The Drive that the car is a passion project from Akio Toyoda, and the goal is to keep it out of flippers' hands.
"We don't want to sell cars to flippers, we only want people who are going to drive it," he said. The first allocation is already sold.
Over 150 interested buyers sat down with Toyota staff at The Quail to spec their cars, even without an official order window. Earlier this year, GR program director Jeff Bal said customers must go through a vetting process before ordering. It's unclear if buyers will have to sign a no-flip contract, but it wouldn't be surprising.
The GR GT is a halo car for Toyota's performance lineup, featuring a new 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 with hybrid assist, making over 641 hp and 627 lb-ft of torque, paired with an eight-speed automatic. Reports suggest a starting price above $220,000. First customer deliveries are reportedly expected next year.
