Toyota Tacoma TRD Off-Road Recalled Over Shock Corrosion Risk

The Toyota Tacoma TRD Off-Road is built to handle tougher terrain than the standard model, but a new recall targets one of its key off-road components. Toyota has issued a recall for roughly 48,000 affected 2024-2025 Tacoma TRD Off-Road trucks due to a corrosion issue with the oil reservoir on the shock absorbers.
Over time, corrosion could cause the reservoir to break away from the vehicle entirely, creating a potential road hazard for other drivers. The announcement came late last week, though the campaign had not yet been posted on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration website at the time of writing, so some details, including the manufacturing date range, are still pending.
Toyota says the corrosion affects the remote reservoir shocks, and owners of impacted models will receive recall notices by early October. They will be instructed to bring their trucks to a Toyota dealer, where the front and rear shock absorber assemblies will be inspected. If needed, affected shock absorbers will be replaced with improved ones at no cost.
Notably, Toyota does not mention an increased crash risk for Tacoma drivers themselves, likely because the suspension still functions, even without the remote reservoir.
This is not the only recent Tacoma recall. S. over potentially faulty replacement airbags installed after an accident. The supplier may not have properly secured the airbag to its mounting bracket, which could reduce the airbag's effectiveness during deployment.
