Toyota Sequoia Trailhunter Takes the Fight to Ford and Chevy Off-Road SUVs

Toyota just dropped a batch of updates for the Sequoia, and if you’ve been keeping an eye on the Tundra, the changes won’t shock you. The big SUV gets subtle styling tweaks and tech upgrades to stay competitive, but the real news is the 2027 Sequoia Trailhunter. This overland-focused trim, already seen on the Tacoma, 4Runner, and Tundra, now lands on the hybrid seven-seater, putting it squarely against off-road rivals like the Ford Expedition Tremor and Chevrolet Tahoe Z71.
The cabin gets a major tech boost. 0-inch touchscreen running Toyota’s latest Multimedia System, with a cleaner menu layout and a customizable home screen. 5 system with better sensors and adds Proactive Driving Assist, a feature that helps keep you safe even when cruise control and lane centering aren’t active.
There’s also a built-in drive data recorder that automatically saves 20-second clips from the front and rear cameras during a collision, and drivers can manually start recording anytime.
The Trailhunter package is where things get interesting. It brings Old Man Emu coilovers and shocks, beefy front recovery hooks, and a heavy-duty skid plate for serious off-road protection. Rigid LED fog lights are integrated into the front bumper, and the SUV rolls on bronze wheels wrapped in Michelin LTX Trail all-terrain tires.
A terrain management system, crawl control, and a locking rear differential help you muscle through rough trails. 4-liter V6 with an electric motor, stays, delivering 437 horsepower, 583 pound-feet of torque, and a 9,500-pound towing capacity. 4-kilowatt power inverter is available, making it a solid choice for camping or job sites.
Toyota hasn’t released full specs yet, but expect more details closer to production this fall.
