Toyota Pushes RAV4 Upmarket as Chinese Brands Reshape South Africa's Car Market

Toyota Pushes RAV4 Upmarket as Chinese Brands Reshape South Africa's Car Market

Toyota has repositioned its all-new RAV4 as a more premium offering in South Africa, a move the company says is a direct response to the growing influence of Chinese automakers in the entry-level segment.

In a recent interview. Toyota South Africa's senior public relations manager, Riaan Esterhuysen, acknowledged that the company cannot compete head-to-head with emerging Chinese brands on price. He noted that these brands have fundamentally changed the market by steering customers toward lower and mid-tier options, and even pulling in used-car buyers.

The new RAV4 starts at roughly 770,500 rand (about $47,100) and tops out at 1,043,900 rand (around $63,800) - approximately $3,500 more than its predecessor. This shift may reduce sales volume, but it could also boost profit per vehicle.

Chinese cars now account for more than 19 percent of new passenger and light commercial vehicle sales in South Africa, with that share expected to grow as more brands enter and existing players expand.

Toyota remains the world's largest automaker, but BYD, its biggest Chinese rival, has set an ambitious goal. In June, BYD chairman Wang Chuanfu claimed the company would overtake Toyota within five years. 21 million, which includes Lexus and Daihatsu. Closing that gap remains a steep challenge.
