Toyota Pulls Over 5,400 SUVs to Hunt Down 270 with Faulty Rear Axles

Toyota Pulls Over 5,400 SUVs to Hunt Down 270 with Faulty Rear Axles

Toyota has announced a recall affecting 5,408 SUVs in the U.S., but the automaker is only expecting about 270 of those vehicles to actually have the defect. The issue centers on rear axle assemblies that may not have been properly heat-treated during manufacturing, potentially leading to cracks and eventual failure.

The recall covers certain 2022 and 2023 model year Toyota 4Runner, Tacoma, and Tundra vehicles, as well as the Lexus LX 600. According to documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the problem stems from a supplier's production error. While all 5,408 vehicles are being recalled for inspection.

Toyota estimates that roughly 5%, or 270 units, will require replacement axles.

Owners will be notified starting late March and can take their SUV to a dealer for a free inspection. If the axle shows signs of improper heat treatment, the entire rear axle assembly will be replaced at no cost. Toyota says there have been no reported accidents or injuries linked to the defect, but the company is urging affected owners to schedule service promptly to avoid potential safety risks.
