Toyota Prius MPG: EPA Ratings and Real-World Highway Test Results

The Toyota Prius remains a top choice for fuel efficiency, and according to EPA estimates, it's still the most efficient new car on sale. However, fuel economy varies significantly by trim level and drivetrain.
For the 2027 model year, the base LE trim leads the lineup with EPA ratings of 59 mpg city, 50 mpg highway, and 55 mpg combined. Higher trims like the XLE and Limited, which come with larger wheels and optional all-wheel drive, see those figures drop to as low as 51 mpg city, 45 mpg highway, and 48 mpg combined.
Toyota also sells a plug-in hybrid version (formerly called the Prius Prime) that can travel up to 44 miles on electric power alone. Because of its heavier battery pack, its gas mileage is slightly lower: the SE trim is rated at 53 mpg city, 51 mpg highway, and 52 mpg combined, while the XSE manages 48 mpg city, 50 mpg highway, and 47 mpg combined.
To see how these numbers hold up in real driving, independent testing measured four Prius versions at a steady 75 mph on the highway. The Limited front-wheel-drive model returned 49 mpg, while the Limited AWD managed 43 mpg. The plug-in SE achieved 49 mpg, and the plug-in XSE got 46 mpg.
These results factor in real-world conditions like air conditioning, weather, and higher speeds, which the EPA's test cycle doesn't fully replicate.
The gap between EPA and real-world numbers is largest for the AWD Prius, which fell well short of its rating. The plug-in models came closer to their official estimates. Wheel size plays a role: the SE rides on 17-inch wheels with aerodynamic covers, while the XSE uses larger 19-inch wheels.
For buyers needing more space. Toyota's Camry and RAV4 are now hybrid-only. The most efficient Camry is rated at 51 mpg combined, and in the same real-world highway test, an AWD XSE version hit 43 mpg, matching the AWD Prius. The RAV4 delivered 36 mpg in the highway test, and its plug-in Woodland trim achieved 35 mpg while also covering 38 miles on electric power alone.
