Toyota Prius Gets a Tiny Refresh in Japan - But Will It Be Enough to Reverse the Sales Slide?

Toyota Prius Gets a Tiny Refresh in Japan - But Will It Be Enough to Reverse the Sales Slide?

Toyota is in an odd spot. Its lineup is so packed with hybrids that the original eco-icon, the Prius, is getting squeezed out. Sales have been slipping for years, and the automaker just announced a mild update for the Japanese market. But if Toyota thinks a new paint color and a few extra features will turn things around, it might be mistaken.

The good news? S. market.

So what did Japan actually get? A new shade called Neutral Black, available on the mid-tier G and top Z trims (roughly our XLE and Limited). Otherwise, the car looks the same: same aerodynamic front, same wheels, same styling. Inside, every model now gets automatic speed-sensitive door locks that also unlock in a crash.

The top Z trim adds advanced adaptive headlights that dim individual LED pixels to avoid blinding oncoming traffic. That’s a nice touch, but hardly a game-changer. Mechanically, nothing changes except a new SNOW EXTRA drive mode for all-wheel-drive models, which adjusts front and rear motor torque for better stability.

S. models still only have Power, Eco, and Normal modes.

We asked Toyota USA if any of these updates were coming here. The answer was no. A spokesperson confirmed that the 2027 model year will bring its own changes, but declined to share specifics. That’s encouraging, because the Prius needs more than a new color. Sales are down 42 percent in the first half of 2026, while the Camry (now hybrid-only) is up 15 percent.

Even the RAV4, struggling with supply issues, is down just 35 percent. The Prius still gets up to 56 mpg, but the Camry and RAV4 are close enough that many buyers choose the extra space. Toyota needs to do something real – and soon – to give the Prius its mojo back.
