Toyota Patent Hints at a Compact Unibody Pickup with Crossover Roots

Toyota Patent Hints at a Compact Unibody Pickup with Crossover Roots

, and Toyota appears to be exploring a way into the segment. A recently uncovered patent shows the automaker is working on a reinforcement system for a unibody pickup bed, which could address a key weakness of car-based trucks. The patent doesn't reveal a finished vehicle, a name, or guarantee production, but it does describe a specific engineering solution.

The patent details a reinforced rear suspension mounting setup for a unibody truck, unlike the body-on-frame Tacoma and Tundra. This smaller model would likely share architecture with a Toyota crossover, such as the RAV4. The design includes a welded metal part called a "strainer" that spreads suspension forces across a larger area of the bed, using stamped beads to boost bending strength without adding much weight.

Additional beads around the rear wheel arch and welded mounting nuts are also part of the plan.

This reinforcement could prevent shock mounts and wheel arches from being pulled inward under heavy loads or rough driving, improving payload, towing, and off-road stability. The patent also suggests Toyota could use the same base for both a pickup and a crossover, with the truck getting the stronger bed and the crossover using a conventional rear cross-member.

That points to a compact pickup built on RAV4 bones, potentially offering hybrid powertrains, all-wheel drive, and existing safety tech.

S. in 2025, showing strong demand for compact trucks. Toyota has a solid reputation in pickups, so its absence in this space is notable. However, the patent is not confirmation that a new model, like a Stout or a RAV4 pickup, will reach showrooms. Automakers often protect ideas that never become real products, but the effort put into solving a specific unibody truck problem suggests more than idle planning.
