Toyota Patent Aims to Fix Hybrid Cargo Space With Wild Exhaust Rerouting

Toyota Patent Aims to Fix Hybrid Cargo Space With Wild Exhaust Rerouting

Hybrids combine the best of both worlds, but their battery packs often eat into cargo space. Toyota, a leader in hybrid tech, has filed a patent that could solve this by moving the battery under the front seats, and it involves an exhaust route unlike anything we've seen.

Hybrid batteries are small (1-2 kWh vs. 60-100 kWh in EVs), but they still take up room. Automakers typically place them in the spare tire well or behind the rear seat, hurting both handling and cargo capacity. Toyota's idea: put the battery under the driver and front passenger, like in an EV.

The catch? The exhaust system must be rerouted.

Normally, the exhaust runs straight back through the center tunnel. Toyota's design would make it exit the engine, turn 90 degrees, then run along the side sills to the rear muffler. This frees up space for the battery and gas tank, preserves cargo room, and lowers the center of gravity for better handling.

It also works with flexible platforms that support both EV and gas models, like the Lexus ES.

But there are trade-offs. The car would need a new gas tank shape, extra heat shielding, and a possible bump-out for the catalytic converter. Also, this setup would block a traditional driveshaft, so AWD would rely on electric motors for the rear wheels, which Toyota already uses in many hybrids.

In a separate patent. Toyota explores a less practical idea: giving EVs a fake manual transmission that can actually "stall" if you mess up the clutch. This would cut power and apply brakes to mimic a gas car's stall. That's more about fun than practicality.

It's important to note that patents don't guarantee production. Toyota files many to protect ideas, so don't expect this on a showroom floor anytime soon. Still, it shows the company is thinking about making hybrids both more fun and more practical.
