Toyota MR2 Revival Spotted Again: Latest Test Mule Hits Fuji Speedway

A Toyota MR2 development car has been caught on camera lapping Fuji Speedway in Japan, signaling that the beloved sports car’s return is still very much alive. New photos and a video surfaced on Twitter after a lucky visitor stopped by the Fuji Speedway Motorsport Museum at just the right moment.

The test mule, a Frankenstein-like machine based on a GR Yaris hatchback, features mismatched body panels, a large front radiator, and massive vents behind the doors, all hinting at a mid-engine layout.

This isn’t the first MR2 mule we’ve seen. Earlier this year, we drove a different Toyota test vehicle called the “M Concept,” which shared the same mid-engine, all-wheel-drive setup. At the time, GR chief engineer Naohiko Saito told us there were six test mules in existence, with at least 14 more planned.

Given that timeline, the Fuji Speedway car appears to be the seventh iteration. While Toyota won’t confirm a production MR2 is coming, the steady stream of prototypes suggests serious development is underway.

0-liter turbo four. Even after three years of tinkering, a final production model remains years away. Still, it’s encouraging to see Toyota continue experimenting with this platform, keeping hope alive for a modern MR2 that could bring back the mid-engine magic.
