Toyota Issues Two Parallel Recalls Over Non-Standard Replacement Airbags

Toyota Issues Two Parallel Recalls Over Non-Standard Replacement Airbags

Toyota has launched two parallel recall campaigns, and the situation is unusual because the parts involved were never standard equipment when the vehicles left the factory. According to Carscoops, the recalls cover 4,118 side curtain airbags made by Joyson Safety Systems and sold as replacement parts after accidents.

The affected vehicles are Toyota Tacoma pickups from the 2016 through 2023 model years and Toyota Tundra pickups from 2014 through 2021. Toyota stressed that the issue applies only to repaired or rebuilt vehicles; owners whose factory airbags were never replaced are not affected by these recalls.

The first recall covers 2,381 Tacoma trucks. Toyota said the supplier may not have secured the airbag firmly enough to its mounting bracket during assembly. In a crash, the system could fail to stay in the intended position, reducing its ability to hold an occupant in the seat and increasing the risk of injury in certain types of collisions.

The second recall involves 1,737 side airbag modules for Tundra Double Cab and CrewMax models. In that case, the supplier made an error while folding the airbag fabric, which may prevent the component from deploying fully or taking the correct shape on impact.

The problem was first noticed during an internal audit at Joyson Safety Systems. After reviewing the findings, Toyota confirmed the defect and opened the official recall. Dealers are required to trace the supply chain of previously sold replacement parts through body shops and service stations so they can contact everyone affected.
