Toyota Hints at Bringing Back Buttons After RAV4 Screen Backlash

The debate over touchscreens versus physical buttons in cars has been heating up, and Toyota is now listening. After moving key climate and seat controls to the screen in the latest RAV4, the automaker is openly considering a reversal. The shift comes as drivers report spending too much time fiddling with a touchscreen to adjust the fan speed or turn on heated seats, a clear safety concern.

RAV4 chief engineer Yoshinori Futonagane told Drive that the decision to strip out buttons for functions like air direction, recirculation, and seat heating wasn't easy. “We went through a lot of drama trying to work out which things should stay as physical switches,” he said. Toyota initially thought the screen-only approach was the minimum needed, but customer feedback is now forcing a rethink.

Even in China, where screens were once preferred, buyers are demanding knobs and switches back.

Toyota isn't alone. Volkswagen, Hyundai, and Mercedes-Benz have already reintroduced physical controls in some models after realizing that touchscreens can be distracting. ” For now, the next-generation RAV4 may offer the best of both worlds, a screen for navigation and entertainment, and buttons for the controls that matter most while driving.
