Toyota GR86: The Cheapest New RWD Manual Coupe With a Strong Reliability Reputation

Toyota GR86: The Cheapest New RWD Manual Coupe With a Strong Reliability Reputation

As everyday cars get faster and crossovers take over, affordable rear-drive sports coupes are becoming harder to justify. The Toyota GR86 is the counterargument. At $31,400, it is the cheapest new rear-drive manual coupe on sale in 2026, undercutting the Ford Mustang at $32,640 and the Mazda MX-5 Miata RF at $38,450.

The standard Miata is $30,430, but that is a convertible.

4-liter flat-four with 228 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque, a six-speed manual, and the same assembly line in Japan. Toyota typically prices the GR86 below the equivalent BRZ. Instead of chasing power. Toyota focused on lightness and handling, the GR86 weighs just over 2,800 pounds and is known for sharp, responsive steering.

Toyota's reliability reputation is a big part of the car's appeal. Average annual maintenance is about $400, $600, while a Corvette, Cayman, or Mustang Dark Horse can cost noticeably more to keep. There are some reported concerns: possible fuel line chafing, oil starvation during high-G track driving, and an RTV sealant debate with limited documented cases.

The infotainment system can also feel dated. Still, the GR86 carries forward the idea that a simple, dependable, fun-to-drive coupe doesn't need to be expensive, or complicated, to be worth it.
