Toyota Gives the Tundra a Major Refresh, Adds a Rugged Trailhunter Trim for 2027

Toyota is breathing new life into its full-size Tundra pickup for the 2027 model year, rolling out a mid-cycle facelift that brings updated styling, a bigger infotainment screen, and a hardcore off-road package borrowed from the smaller Tacoma. The new Trailhunter trim is designed for overlanders who want to tackle rough trails straight from the factory, without having to spend extra on aftermarket upgrades.

It’s a move that aims to inject some excitement into a truck that’s been struggling with reliability complaints since its third-generation debut in 2022.

The Trailhunter gets real hardware from Australia’s Old Man Emu, including a new coilover front suspension and revised rear dampers for better control on washboard roads and forest paths. Underneath, a stamped steel skid plate protects the front bumper, radiator, and oil pan, while heavy-duty tow hooks front and rear make recovery easier.

Toyota also packs in its off-road tech suite, Crawl Control, Multi-Terrain Select, and a locking rear differential. The package is expected to start around $60,000, based on the mid-level SR5 trim, though Toyota hasn’t confirmed whether it will come exclusively with the hybrid i-FORCE MAX powertrain, as it does on the Tacoma.

Inside, every 2027 Tundra gets a new 14-inch touchscreen running Toyota’s latest Multimedia system, which finally includes a customizable home screen. A standard drive recorder captures 20-second clips from the front and rear cameras, triggered manually or automatically. 0, adding Proactive Driving Assist that gently nudges the driver in tricky situations, and can be turned off.

4-kilowatt onboard power supply for tools and campsite gear. Exterior tweaks include a larger hexagonal grille and under-headlight vents borrowed from the Tacoma, plus Rigid LED fog lights on the Trailhunter. Toyota says full specs, pricing, and capability ratings will come later this year.
