Toyota Gives the 2027 Prius a Tiny Refresh - But Will It Be Enough?

Toyota Gives the 2027 Prius a Tiny Refresh - But Will It Be Enough?

The Toyota Prius is having a rough year. Sales have dropped nearly 43 percent compared to last year, following a couple of solid years of growth. With the current generation now entering its fifth model year, many expected a strong refresh for 2027. Instead. Toyota is mostly sticking with what it has, adding just one new standard feature and making some puzzling changes to fuel economy.

The only new addition across all Prius and Prius PHEV trims is dual-zone automatic climate control, along with two fresh paint colors: Inked for all models and Karashi for the Nightshade edition. The price bump is modest, $205 on MSRP plus a $100 increase in destination fees, bringing the total rise to $305.

All-wheel drive remains a $1,400 option on the standard Prius. Starting prices now range from $30,050 for the base LE to $41,970 for the top-trim Prius PHEV XSE Premium.

Here’s where it gets odd: while city fuel economy improved by 2 to 3 mpg on most regular Prius models, highway numbers dropped significantly, by 5 to 6 mpg. Combined ratings fell by 1 to 2 mpg depending on the trim. The plug-in Prius saw smaller shifts: the SE actually gained 2 mpg-e on a full battery (now 129 mpg-e), while the XSE and above lost 1 mpg in combined gas-only driving.

Electric range stays the same at 44 miles for the SE and 39 miles for the rest. We’ve asked Toyota for an explanation and will update if we hear back.

The real question is whether this minimal update can revive interest. A $305 price bump for standard dual-zone climate control is fine, but the Prius is getting older in a competitive market. Without a more compelling change, it may take a spike in gas prices, not a new paint color, to get buyers back in the showroom.
