Toyota Files Trademark for ‘Camry Apex,’ Hinting at a Sportier Sedan

Toyota may be plotting a return to fun with its popular Camry sedan. A new trademark filing uncovered by CarBuzz reveals the automaker has secured the name “Camry Apex,” sparking speculation about a performance-oriented version of the hybrid-only sedan. The move comes two years after Toyota dropped the beloved V6-powered Camry TRD, which had earned a cult following for its surprising agility and bold styling.
The Apex name isn’t new to Toyota. In 2021, the company released a limited-run Corolla Apex Edition, which featured a lowered sport suspension, stronger sway bars, lighter 18-inch wheels, and a sport-tuned exhaust. Only 120 manual-transmission models were built. ” If the Camry follows a similar playbook, enthusiasts could see mild but meaningful handling upgrades rather than a power boost.
5-liter four-cylinder engine producing 184 horsepower. A V6 option is off the table. Still, Toyota has spent years trying to shake its reputation for bland reliability, leaning into performance models like the GR Corolla, 86, and Supra. A Camry Apex edition—likely based on the SE or XSE trim—could add stiffer springs, revised shocks, and perhaps a louder exhaust to give the sedan a sharper edge.
Toyota has not confirmed the model, and trademark filings often serve only to protect intellectual property. But given the brand’s love for special editions, the odds look good.
