Toyota Confirms First U.S. GR GT Run Is Already Sold Out - On Purpose

Toyota Confirms First U.S. GR GT Run Is Already Sold Out - On Purpose

Toyota has confirmed that the entire first batch of GR GT supercars headed to the United States has already been claimed, and the company says that shortfall is intentional.

At a media event during Monterey Car Week, Andrew Gilleland. Toyota’s senior vice president of automotive operations, told Car and Driver that the initial U.S. allocation will be fewer than 250 cars, specifically between 200 and 250, though the automaker declined to share global production numbers.

Gilleland said the limited supply is by design, aimed at keeping the cars out of the hands of flippers and collectors who would stash them away. He noted that he plans to personally speak with every GR GT buyer before the sale is finalized, ensuring each customer intends to actually drive the vehicle.

“It’s a passion project, and it was made because Akio Toyoda wants a world-class performance car. We don’t want to sell cars to flippers; we only want people who are going to drive it,” Gilleland said.

The GR GT is still in development, but it’s known to feature a hybrid twin-turbo 4.0-liter V-8 targeting around 640 horsepower. Official pricing hasn’t been announced, though estimates put the starting figure near $300,000 or higher.
