Toyota Built a V8 Supra for Australia - and You Can’t Have One

A Toyota Supra with a V8 under the hood sounds like a pipe dream, especially with the current GR Supra already out of production and the four-cylinder version long gone. 0-liter engine from the Lexus LC 500. The catch? It’s not coming to the United States. Not now, not anytime soon.

The reason is as surprising as the car itself. Toyota developed this V8 Supra exclusively for Australia’s Supercars championship, announced in September 2024 after 20 years of teasing. The so-called “GR Supra Supercar” was built from scratch around the series’ Gen3 chassis, a process that took 18 grueling months.

But the road-going Supra was too short and narrow for the chassis, so Toyota turned to the 2014 FT-1 concept, which had the right proportions.

2 liters to meet Supercars regulations. S. to make it happen. This isn’t the first V8 Supra, Japan’s GT300 series has one, but it breaks from the Supra’s long history of four- and six-cylinder engines, from the 1978 Celica-based straight-six to the legendary 2JZ-GTE in the A80. A road-going V8 Supra isn’t coming, as Toyota focuses on racing and tighter emissions rules.

But there’s hope: a new Celica teaser suggests a production model may follow its rally debut, offering a consolation prize for fans.
