Toyota and Lexus Keep Playing with a Fake Stick Shift for EVs - Here’s What It Means for Local Drivers

Toyota and Lexus are still tinkering with a simulated manual transmission for electric vehicles. A new patent shows they’re working on a system that includes a clutch pedal, gear shifter, and even launch control—all designed to mimic a traditional stick shift, even though there’s no engine or actual gearbox under the hood.

How it works: The software calculates a virtual engine speed. If you pick the wrong gear or let the clutch out too fast, the car can actually “stall” by cutting motor torque and bringing you to a stop. It can also assess your skill level—giving beginners hill-hold assistance while letting experienced drivers handle it on their own.

For now, this is still just a concept. Toyota and Lexus haven’t confirmed production, partly because of licensing questions in some countries. But if it ever arrives, it would be an option on select EVs, not a standard feature.

What does this mean for you? If you drive a Toyota or Lexus EV in the future, you might get to choose between a traditional automatic feel or this nostalgic manual experience. For now, it’s a reminder that even as cars get more advanced, some automakers still think about driver engagement.

If you own a Toyota, Lexus, or any European or Japanese vehicle—including hybrids—and have questions about recalls, maintenance, or how new technology might affect your car, bring it by Boca Auto Care.
