Toyota and BMW Put Renewable Gas to the Test on Real Roads

Toyota and BMW have quietly launched a real-world experiment that could offer a surprising alternative to the all-electric push. The two automotive giants are now testing a renewable gasoline developed by Spanish energy company Repsol, called Nexa 95. Early claims suggest this fuel can cut tailpipe emissions by a hefty 70 percent compared to standard pump gas.

The trial isn't happening in a lab. Instead, the automakers have put the fuel into a fleet of regular vehicles driving on actual roads. This hands-on approach aims to see how the renewable gas performs under everyday conditions, stop-and-go traffic, highway cruising, and everything in between.

For drivers who aren't ready to switch to an electric vehicle, this could represent a meaningful step toward lowering their carbon footprint without changing their car or driving habits.

Repsol's Nexa 95 is produced using organic waste and other renewable sources, making it a drop-in replacement for conventional gasoline. That means it can be used in existing internal combustion engines without any modifications. While the auto industry has largely focused on battery electric vehicles as the primary path to zero emissions, this collaboration suggests that internal combustion isn't being written off just yet.

Toyota and BMW are betting that a mix of solutions, including renewable fuels, might be the most realistic way to reduce emissions across the global car fleet.
