This Isuzu VehiCROSS Got a Lexus V8 Swap and Sold for Just $12,000

This Isuzu VehiCROSS Got a Lexus V8 Swap and Sold for Just $12,000

—only three years—but it left a lasting impression as one of the most distinctive compact SUVs of the late ’90s. Built for serious off-road work, it’s a machine that rewards those who can’t leave things stock. A particularly bold example just sold at auction in Denver for $12,000, and given what’s under the hood, that price looks like a steal.

Isuzu originally offered the VehiCROSS with V6 engines, but this one ditched both. 0-liter V8, the same powerplant found in the Lexus LS 400 and SC 400. It’s been upgraded with a new intake manifold and a coil-on-plug conversion, and it’s mated to a five-speed manual transmission pulled from a Hummer H3.

The rest of the build is just as serious. 77:1 differentials, and Aisin manually locking front hubs make sure all that power reaches the ground. It rolls on 35-inch General Grabber X3 tires wrapped around 15-inch aftermarket wheels. The factory KYB shocks were retuned to smooth out the ride.

A hood vent keeps the V8 cool, while a roof basket, LED light bar, and custom front bumper with recovery points round out the exterior.

Inside, it’s mostly stock, but you’ll find a Pioneer infotainment screen and a digital instrument cluster. The odometer reads around 225,000 miles. For a custom off-roader with a Lexus heart, $12,000 is a bargain—and a reminder that sometimes the wildest builds are also the smartest buys.
