This Chopped Jeep Liberty Is the Ultimate $4,500 Convertible Beater

America turns 250 this year, and if you were hoping for a patriotic special-edition vehicle worth celebrating, you’re probably disappointed. Most of the so-called America 250 packages are just tape stripes and badges. But the real spirit of the pursuit of happiness? It’s alive and well on Facebook Marketplace, hiding in Cherryvale, Kansas, in the form of a 2003 Jeep Liberty with no roof.

Someone took the roof off this Liberty after it got damaged, then bolted in a roll cage to keep things safe and somewhat rigid. The seller wants $4,500 or a trade, and since it’s been listed for 11 weeks, there’s room to haggle. Yes, it’s a rebuilt salvage title with 165,000 miles.

Yes, the seller says it runs and drives great with working A/C and cruise control. But at 23 years old and heavily modified, you’re buying a mystery box on wheels. The roll cage looks decent in photos, but nobody can vouch for the welds from a listing.

Underneath, there’s a claimed three-inch lift and bigger tires, plus the standard two-speed transfer case on 4WD models. The wheelbase is shorter than a JL Wrangler Unlimited, making it surprisingly nimble. 7-liter V6—the listing doesn’t say which, so you’ll have to ask. The Liberty never matched the Cherokee XJ’s legacy, and its rounded styling was polarizing.

But without a roof, it looks genuinely cool, like a poor man’s Wrangler with more character. And for once, the price of freedom is actually cheap.
