This 1972 Ford Pinto Squire Wagon Asks $23,777 - Is That a Fair Price or a Pipe Dream?

A 1972 Ford Pinto Squire wagon has surfaced for sale in California with a price tag of $23,777, and it’s already stirring up debate among classic car fans. Unlike the Pinto sedan and hatchback, which gained notoriety for fuel tank ruptures in rear-end collisions, the wagon’s longer rear overhang made it far less susceptible to that hazard.
That’s a good thing, because this particular Squire has survived in remarkable shape, wearing its original beige paint and signature woodgrain vinyl siding with pride. The seller says it was built at Ford’s San Jose assembly plant in April 1972 and spent its entire life in California, meaning there’s no rust to worry about.
0-liter four-cylinder engine, rated at 86 horsepower, paired with a four-speed manual transmission. The seller notes that the car has received a new clutch, brakes, shocks, and a rebuilt carburetor, with as many NOS parts as possible used during the work. Inside, the vinyl upholstery, dash, and carpet are all in excellent condition, though the rear wheel arch trim has faded a bit.
The only non-original additions are a gauge panel on the transmission tunnel and speakers cut into the front kick panels. With 99,302 miles on the odometer, this Pinto is a genuine survivor from an era when that kind of mileage often spelled the end of the road.
The big question, of course, is whether $23,777 is reasonable for a Pinto wagon. That’s roughly ten times what the car cost new in 1972. On one hand, clean, turnkey examples of these two-door wagons are rare, and this one would certainly draw a crowd at any car show. On the other hand, for the same money, you could buy a lot of other classic cars that might offer more driving excitement or prestige.
The seller calls it a “blast from the past” and says it’s fun to drive. Whether that’s enough to justify the asking price is up to you. The car is listed on Craigslist in San Diego, and the ad includes a clean title and current registration.
