Thinking of Becoming an Auto Mechanic? Here’s Where to Start

If you’ve got a knack for fixing things and want a career that pays well and keeps you busy, the auto repair industry is hungry for new talent. But wanting the job and landing it are two different things. The path from daydream to paycheck starts with a solid plan, and we’ve mapped out the key steps to get you turning wrenches for real.

First things first: you need a high school diploma or a GED. Shops want proof you can handle basic math, reading, and communication, and that you show up on time. Without that credential, even a natural-born mechanic will struggle to get hired. Once you’ve got that, look into trade school or community college.

An associate degree typically takes two years and covers everything from English and electronics to brake systems and electric vehicles. The EV market is booming, so knowing your way around both gas engines and battery packs will set you apart.

Beyond formal schooling, certifications are your best friend. The Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) credential is the industry gold standard, many shops require it. You can also earn brand-specific certifications for the cars you work on most, or get EPA certified for AC repairs.

An apprenticeship is another smart move; you’ll learn hands-on while building connections. And don’t think you’re done once you’re hired. Cars change fast, new tech, new fuels, new problems. The mechanics who keep learning, whether it’s EV battery life or collision repair, are the ones who get better pay and happier customers.

That constant challenge? It’s what makes the job worth doing.
