Thinking of a Used Toyota? Here’s How RAV4 and Highlander Values Stack Up

If you’re shopping for a pre-owned Toyota—or thinking of trading yours in—you’ve probably wondered which models hold their value best. A recent study by Kelley Blue Book compared the 2021 Toyota RAV4 and the larger Highlander, and the results are worth knowing if you drive a Toyota or any other brand we service at Boca Auto Care.

Over three years, the 2021 RAV4 lost about 25% of its original value, while the bigger Highlander dropped roughly 29%. That means a RAV4 that started around $26,250 is now worth about $21,100 in a private sale, and a Highlander that began near $35,000 is closer to $22,500. Why the difference?

5-liter V6—tend to depreciate faster because of higher fuel and maintenance costs. 5-liter four-cylinder helps it hold on better.

But here’s the good news for hybrid owners: Both the RAV4 Hybrid and Highlander Hybrid lost only about 24% over the same period. That’s because hybrids get significantly better gas mileage—the RAV4 Hybrid achieves 40 mpg combined versus 30 mpg for the gas version—making them more desirable on the used market.

What does this mean for you? Whether you drive a Toyota, Lexus, Honda, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Audi, Porsche, VW, Volvo, or Jaguar, keeping up with maintenance is the best way to protect your car’s value. At Boca Auto Care, we’ve been helping South Florida owners since 1989 with expert service for European and Japanese vehicles, including hybrids.
