The Used VW SUV That’s Basically a Porsche for Under $8,000

In the late 1990s, Volkswagen chairman Ferdinand Piëch had a bold vision: prove VW could build world-class cars. That ambition gave us the wild W12 Nardo concept and the luxurious Phaeton sedan. But perhaps his most practical legacy is the Touareg, a premium SUV co-developed with Porsche that hit the road in 2002.
Today, early models sell for as little as $3,000, making this essentially a Porsche Cayenne in VW clothing at a fraction of the price.
The Touareg and Cayenne share the same chassis, suspension, and drivetrain components. Porsche handled design and engineering, while VW supplied its production muscle. The Touareg was pitched as a more comfort-oriented, off-road-capable alternative, with a name borrowed from the rugged Berber Tuareg tribe.
2-liter VR6 engine delivered 217 horsepower and a distinctive exhaust note, thanks to its compact, narrow V-angle design. It was lighter and more fuel-efficient than the V8 and V10 options, and cheaper to maintain. 6 liters, raising output to 276 hp.
Today, used Touareg VR6s are a steal. Pre-facelift models (2004-2007) average around $7,742 for examples under 70,000 miles, while later models (2008-2010) fetch about $12,000. High-mileage versions can drop below $3,000. 8 inches of ground clearance with air suspension. 8 inches of water and climb a 45-degree incline.
Just be ready for maintenance costs, RepairPal estimates $937 per year, and electrical gremlins are common on these aging SUVs. Skip the air suspension to avoid costly repairs, and you’ll have a capable, comfortable, and surprisingly cool SUV that shares DNA with a Porsche.
