The New Dodge Charger R/T Weighs More Than a Mazda CX-90 SUV. Yes, Really.

Boca Auto Care has seen a lot of wild vehicles roll through our bay doors, but this one still raises eyebrows. Car and Driver recently tested the 2026 Dodge Charger Sixpack R/T and found that the four-door muscle car tips the scales at a hefty 4,921 pounds. That’s 25 pounds heavier than Mazda’s three-row, eight-passenger CX-90 SUV.
And here’s the kicker: the CX-90 actually has a higher top speed. The Charger’s governor kicks in at 125 mph, while the Mazda will keep pulling all the way to 127.
9-second sprint. But on a long enough straightaway, the Mazda catches up. After about 21 seconds of hard acceleration, the CX-90 passes the Dodge and keeps going. It takes nearly 30 seconds to hit 120 mph, but it gets there. And it does so with twice the passenger capacity. So if you’re a CX-90 owner at Cars and Coffee this Sunday, you’ve got bragging rights.
What makes the Charger so heavy? Blame the STLA architecture, which was designed to handle both gas and electric powertrains. That platform, combined with standard all-wheel drive and wider tires, adds serious pounds. The new Charger R/T is 576 pounds heavier than the last Scat Pack model we tested.
And if you think that’s bad, the all-electric Charger Daytona Scat Pack sedan weighs 5,938 pounds, 16 pounds more than a Ram 1500 Laramie pickup. No Hemi in sight, but plenty of heft. At Boca Auto Care, we’re always fascinated by how automakers balance power, weight, and practicality.
This matchup proves that sometimes the underdog SUV can outrun the muscle car, at least on the top end.
