The Most Dependable Pickups Ever Built: Toyota Takes the Top Two Spots

A new ranking of the most reliable trucks of all time puts two Toyotas at the top, with Ford models landing in third and fifth place. D. Power ratings, recall data, common problems, and consumer complaints, highlights pickups that are known for surviving high mileage rather than just packing modern tech.
The Toyota Tacoma takes the number one spot, with first and second generation models (1995-2015) praised for overbuilt cooling systems and forged internals. Late second-generation models from 2011 to 2015 are considered the best picks. However, early models suffered from frame corrosion issues that led to a massive recall program.
7% probability of exceeding 250,000 miles.
The Toyota Tundra ranks second. 7L V8 are called masterclasses in over-engineering. A 2007 Tundra famously reached 1,000,000 miles with its original engine and transmission. 4 billion replacing rusted frames on 2000-2010 models.
Ford's F-250 takes third place, thanks to the legendary 7.3L PowerStroke diesel engine built by Navistar. This engine, used from 1994.5 to 2003, can easily surpass 350,000 miles and has a simple failure point in the camshaft position sensor that can be fixed roadside.
The Dodge Ram 2500/3500 (1994-1998) with the 12-valve 5.9L Cummins diesel ranks fourth. This engine uses mechanical injection and can exceed 1,000,000 miles once the infamous "Killer Dowel Pin" issue is addressed.
Ford's F-150 takes fifth place with the ninth-generation "Old Body Style" (late 1980s-1996). 9L inline-six engine uses gear-driven timing with no belts or chains to fail. The Chevrolet Silverado 1500 (1999-2006), Ford Ranger (1998-2011), Chevy C/K Series (1973-1987), Nissan Frontier (2005-2021), and Honda Ridgeline round out the top ten.
The Honda Ridgeline is noted for its unibody construction, which avoids frame-flex issues. The Nissan Frontier's early models had a notorious radiator defect called the "Strawberry Milkshake of Death," but post-2011 models became nearly indestructible. The Chevy C/K "Square Body" is praised for its simple small block V8 that needs no diagnostic software, though rust is a major issue.
