The Mazda MX-6: The Forgotten Sports Coupe Overshadowed by the Miata

The Mazda MX-6 is one of those nameplates that never quite made it big, even though it had real sports-car credentials. While the MX-5 Miata became the best-selling two-seat roadster of all time, the MX-6 quietly soldiered on as a capable, stylish coupe without ever escaping its younger sibling's massive shadow.

The MX-6 debuted in 1987 on Mazda's GD platform, shared with the Capella/626 and the Ford Probe. 2-liter four-cylinder making 110 hp, with a turbocharged GT trim pushing 145 hp. A notable option was four-wheel steering, which improved turning radius at low speeds and highway stability at higher speeds.

The second generation arrived in 1991 with a sleeker design and a new K-series V6. North American versions were built in Flat Rock, Michigan, alongside the 626 and Probe, and offered in LX (118 hp) and LS (164 hp) trims, plus an LS M-Edition with gold badging and cream leather. 0-liter V6 was available.

In 2026, the MX-6 remains an affordable used car, typically selling between $3,000 and $6,000, with pristine examples occasionally reaching $8,000 to $11,000. First-gen GTs and low-mileage second-gen LS manuals are the most sought after. It offers solid RADwood-era nostalgia and value compared to pricier rivals like the Honda Prelude.
