The Jeep Wrangler 4xe Proved the Internet Wrong - Here’s How It Became a Surprising Off-Road Star

The Jeep Wrangler 4xe Proved the Internet Wrong - Here’s How It Became a Surprising Off-Road Star

When Jeep announced a plug-in hybrid Wrangler, the 4xe, the internet erupted. Purists argued that batteries and electric motors had no place under the hood of a rugged off-roader built on simplicity. Adding high-voltage wiring to a machine known for primitive, dependable construction seemed like blasphemy to many.

But the doomsayers were off the mark. The 4xe didn’t just survive the skepticism, it became America’s best-selling plug-in hybrid, and for good reason.

The secret wasn’t just the 21 miles of all-electric range, which let many owners handle daily commutes without burning a drop of gas. The real game-changer was the instant torque from the electric motors. This wasn’t a compromise; it was a capability upgrade. On the trail, the 4xe could crawl silently over obstacles, giving drivers a new sensory experience, hearing tires grip rock, feeling suspension flex, and getting immediate power without waiting for revs.

It made the Wrangler faster than most versions (second only to the V8 Rubicon 392) and dramatically improved fuel economy in stop-and-go traffic, where traditional Wranglers struggled most.

Today, the 4xe is discontinued after the 2025 model year, but used examples offer real value. Budget-conscious buyers can find high-mileage 2021-2023 models for $20,000 to $23,000. The sweet spot sits between $23,000 and $40,000 for mid-mileage Sahara and Rubicon trims. Premium low-mileage 2023-2025 models range from $42,000 to $55,000.

And for those still worried about range anxiety on the trail: the gas engine kicks in automatically when the battery depletes. The 4xe never needs to be plugged in to drive, it’s a hybrid that works like a traditional Wrangler when you need it, and like an EV when you don’t.
