The Hand-Built 469-HP Cadillac V8 GM Quietly Killed Off

Cadillac entered the late 2000s in an awkward position, fresh off shedding its reputation as a brand for older drivers. The company was trying to adapt to a market where giant, leather-heavy sedans no longer worked, so it paired modern designs with far more advanced engines than its traditional buyers expected.

The "Art and Science" design philosophy, pushed by GM chief designer Kip Wasenko and his team, including Mike Torpey, Simon Cox, and Tom Kearns, spawned concepts like the Evoq, the V12-powered Cien, and the Sixteen. This led to the CTS, STS, and DTS sedans, plus the transformative Escalade.

The engine at the heart of the STS-V was the LC3 Northstar V8. Originally developed by Oldsmobile in the late 1980s, the Northstar line was GM's first serious attempt to rival BMW, Mercedes, and Audi. 6-liter versions had dual overhead cams and four valves per cylinder, producing near 300 horsepower, but weak head gaskets and oil leaks plagued them.

0:1 compression, stronger head bolts, and a sand-cast aluminum block. With an Eaton M122 supercharger, variable valve timing on both camshafts, a forged steel crankshaft, and powdered metal connecting rods, the LC3 produced 469 horsepower at 6,400 rpm and 439 lb-ft of torque at 3,900 rpm.

Water-to-air intercoolers in the intake manifold helped prevent heat soak.

Each LC3 was hand-assembled at GM's Wixom Performance Build Center in Michigan, the same facility that built the LS3, LS7, and supercharged LS9 V8s for Corvettes. The STS-V hit 60 mph in 4.6 seconds and ran the quarter-mile in the mid-to-high 13s.

But production was tiny. Between 2006 and 2009, GM made roughly 2,500 STS-Vs, about 650 per year. By comparison. BMW sold over 20,000 E60 M5s and Mercedes-AMG sold over 11,000 E63s during the same period. The STS-V was discontinued along with the STS lineup in 2011, though the car lingered a few extra years in China.

Cadillac didn't return to that segment until the 2019 CT6-V with its Blackwing V8. Today, a used STS-V can often be found for around $10,000, making it one of the most underrated performance sedans of its era.
