The Dodge Dart 318: Muscle Car Looks and Real-World Endurance

The Dodge Dart 318: Muscle Car Looks and Real-World Endurance

Classic muscle cars usually come with a warning: enjoy the noise, but budget for a rebuild. The fourth-generation Dodge Dart, built from 1967 to 1976, didn't follow that script. 2-liter LA-series 318 V8 under the hood, it racked up six-figure miles in taxi fleets and police work, then served as a weekend muscle car without complaint.

The 318 was built to be overbuilt. Cast-iron block and heads, thick connecting rods, strong main bearing caps, and a forged crankshaft in pre-1973 engines were matched by generous oil passages and larger-than-usual water jackets. It never developed a signature failure in nearly 25 years of production.

Running a two-barrel carburetor and modest compression, it simply worked well inside its limits, the same formula Toyota would later use to earn its reliability reputation, but with a V8 soundtrack.

Dodge even offered a dedicated Dart taxi package with heavy-duty brakes, cooling, and suspension. The Swinger hardtop arrived for 1969 at $2,400, bringing Rallye suspension, a power-bulge hood, and dual exhaust. The Dart GTS had already debuted in late 1967 to take on the Chevrolet Nova SS.

Since the A-body weighed under 3,000 pounds, even the modest 318 made it genuinely lively.

Numbers shifted with the times: early 318s made 230 horsepower and 320 lb-ft under the old gross rating, while 1971 net ratings showed 155 horsepower and 260 lb-ft. A 1972 compression drop to 8.6:1 left 150 horsepower. Paperwork aside, the engine's character carried on.

Today, 318 Darts remain the value pick. com's $32,157 average Swinger sale is inflated by 340-powered cars; 318 examples sell for less. Streetside Classics listed a 1972 survivor at $28,995 and a 1973 with air conditioning at $22,995, while project cars can be found near $4,000 and solid drivers in the teens.

With LA-family parts still easy to find from millions of later Chryslers, the overlooked 318 Dart is the muscle car that asks the least and gives the most.
