The Dodge Charger 392: The Muscle Car Bargain That’s Easy to Overlook

When the Hellcat gets all the glory, it’s easy to forget there’s another Charger that delivers serious thrills without the six-figure price tag. 4-liter Hemi V8 under the hood, offering a throwback to the golden era of muscle cars. 2 seconds and leave tire tracks that would make a 1969 Charger jealous.
And on the used market, they’re selling for roughly $38,500 to $40,000, about $20,000 less than what a typical Hellcat commands.
The 392 was introduced in 2015, pairing that big V8 with an eight-speed automatic and rear-wheel drive. It came loaded with adaptive suspension, Brembo brakes, and leather seats. In 2018, Dodge replaced it with the Scat Pack, a stripped-down version that kept the engine but ditched many of the luxury extras to lower the price.
Both models were discontinued when the seventh-generation Charger ended in 2023. While they lack the supercharged 707-hp Hellcat engine, they’re far more manageable for daily driving, and far cheaper to feed, averaging 18 mpg compared to the Hellcat’s single digits.
There are a few things to watch for if you’re shopping used. 4-liter Hemi is generally reliable, but some owners report a ticking noise caused by wear on the roller lifters and camshaft lobes, a fix that can run about $4,000. Regular maintenance is key, and you’ll need to budget for eight spark plugs and coil packs.
Still, for a modern muscle car that offers real-world practicality and old-school character, the 392 and Scat Pack are hard to beat. They may not be collector’s items, but that’s exactly why they’re such a smart buy for anyone who wants a proper V8 sedan without breaking the bank.
