The Buick Muscle Car So Rare Even Most Collectors Don’t Know It Exists

Ask any Buick enthusiast to name the rarest muscle car from the 1960s, and they’ll almost certainly point to the Skylark GS. It’s the one with the magazine covers, the drag-strip cred, and the six-figure auction results. But the actual rarest performance Buick of that era isn’t a Skylark at all.

It’s a full-size luxury cruiser that looked more at home in a country club parking lot than on a quarter-mile track. Chrome trim, a vinyl roof, and plush seats hid something under the hood that most people never expected.

That something was the Super Wildcat package, offered on Buick’s full-size Wildcat from 1964 to 1966. Under the hood sat a 425-cubic-inch Nailhead V8 fed by twin Carter four-barrel carburetors, rated at 360 horsepower and 465 lb-ft of torque. Buyers could pair it with a four-speed manual or a three-speed automatic, plus a limited-slip differential.

Period testers called it the “Executive Hot Rod” because it was a genuine performance machine dressed in a banker’s suit. But the numbers tell the real story. In 1964, Buick built just 638 dual-quad Wildcats total. By 1966, that number dropped to a reported 22 units — and some sources even dispute whether all of those came from the factory or included dealer-installed examples.

Compare that to the Skylark GS, which has its own valuation line in collector guides and production totals that are well-documented. The Super Wildcat is so rare it doesn’t even have its own separate value entry. A standard 1966 Wildcat GS in excellent condition is worth around $21,800.

The dual-quad version? There’s no market data to track it. That absence says more than any production figure could. The rarest Buick muscle car of the 1960s isn’t hiding because nobody wants it. It’s hiding because almost nobody knows it ever existed.
