The BMW M30: The Overlooked Six That Powered Everything From Sedans to Alpina's Record-Setter

The BMW M30: The Overlooked Six That Powered Everything From Sedans to Alpina's Record-Setter

The BMW M30 doesn't get the same love as the S38 or S54, but it's the reason those engines exist. It started as a bored-out version of BMW's four-cylinder M10 and went on to power everything from the E3 sedan to the E9 coupe, spanning 27 years of production from 1968 to 1995.

4 liters across seven core variants, all sharing an iron block and forged crank that routinely handle 250,000-plus miles. BMW turbocharged it for the 745i, and Alpina built a twin-turbo version producing 355 horsepower for the B10 Biturbo, which briefly held the title of fastest production sedan in the world.

The engine's lineage runs deep into BMW Motorsport's history. In the late 1970s, engineers used the M30 block to develop the four-valve DOHC M88 that powered the M1, which later evolved into the S38 used in the E28 M5. There's also the rare M90 variant, a parts-bin engine combining the M88's block with the M30's own head, built between 1979 and 1982.

Reliability is the M30's calling card. Well-maintained examples often reach 250,000 to 300,000 miles on original internals. However, the aluminum head is vulnerable to overheating, the timing chain can stretch, and valve stem seals harden with age, causing blue smoke at startup.

Vacuum lines also degrade over decades, leading to rough idle.

For maintenance, the cooling system is the top priority, replace the thermostat, hoses, and radiator preventively. Listen for timing chain rattle at cold start, and budget for chain and guide replacement if service history is unknown. A compression test and leak inspection are essential before purchase, especially for pre-1981 carbureted models, which need a specialist familiar with older fuel systems.

Tuning potential is proven. The factory turbocharged M30 in the 745i made 252 hp, while Alpina's B10 Biturbo pushed 355 hp with forged pistons. Naturally aspirated builds respond well to ported heads and performance cams, but serious power requires machine-shop work, not bolt-on parts.

The M30's legacy is one of quiet endurance. It outlived three generations of 5 Series, survived multiple emissions eras, and eventually gained appreciation as the cars it powered, especially the E9 CSL, climb in collector value. For an engine that began as a bored-out four-cylinder, 27 years in production is a record that speaks for itself.
