The Battle for Truck Supremacy Heats Up: Ram Closes the Gap on Rivals

The Battle for Truck Supremacy Heats Up: Ram Closes the Gap on Rivals

Full-size pickup trucks remain the backbone of American roads and the Detroit Three’s bottom lines. As we hit the midpoint of 2026, the competition is getting fiercer. Ram is closing in on the number-two spot for the first time in years, while General Motors is pulling ahead of Ford when you combine Silverado and Sierra sales.

The gap between the F-Series and Silverado is narrowing, too. But here’s the twist: Ram is the only brand posting a big sales jump — and the reason isn’t much of a mystery. Let’s break down the numbers through June.

09 million a year ago. Ford took the biggest hit, losing 46,859 F-150 and Super Duty sales due to an ongoing aluminum supplier issue. Ram, meanwhile, gained 33,296 units. GMC slipped by 8,414, and the Tundra dropped 598. All told, about 20,000 buyers simply sat out the market. GM moved 436,954 trucks in the first six months (Silverado and Sierra combined), beating Ford’s 352,960, but the F-Series remains the top-selling nameplate — partly because Ford sells under one badge while GM splits between two.

Ram sold 207,616, and Toyota moved 74,368. GM North America President Duncan Aldred said rising gas prices are cutting into full-size sales — a challenge Ford also faces, though the Blue Oval hopes to recover about 50,000 lost units in the second half of the year as its supply chain stabilizes.

So what’s driving Ram’s surge? The return of the Hemi V8 is almost certainly a factor. Ram boss Tim Kuniskis said earlier this year that Stellantis plans to build an extra 100,000 Hemi engines annually, and in models where it’s available, take rates are around 40%. Ram also recently launched the revived TRX and the Rumble Bee sport trucks, though neither has hit dealerships yet.

The bigger picture? Falling sales at Ford and GM are leading to bigger discounts. Chevrolet is now offering 0% financing for five years with no payments until September, and online build tools show discounts of $2,000 to $3,500 depending on trim. Ram is also rolling out aggressive deals.

With fuel prices starting to ease, this might be a smart time to shop for a new pickup.
