The Audi S6: A V10 Sleeper That's Now Surprisingly Affordable

2-liter naturally aspirated V10 derived from the same architecture as the Lamborghini Gallardo's engine. It produces 429 horsepower and 398 lb-ft of torque, paired with a six-speed automatic and all-wheel drive.

1 seconds isn't groundbreaking, and its 4,400-plus-pound curb weight keeps it from being nimble. But the real appeal is the experience: a refined yet raw ten-cylinder wail that rivals supercars costing twice as much. The Quattro system adds all-weather confidence, making it a usable year-round daily driver, assuming you can accept roughly 15 mpg.

Today, depreciation has made this V10 sedan a bargain. According to Classic.com, resale values for good-condition models average around $9,250 in the U.S., with high-mileage examples closer to $6,000. Even low-mileage cars rarely exceed $15,000. That's economy-car money for a Lamborghini-sourced engine with four doors.

However, the low purchase price comes with caveats. The engine is tightly packaged and complex, and common complaints include timing chain and tensioner wear (which requires an engine-out job to fix), oil consumption, carbon buildup on intake valves, and failed coil packs. Early Multitronic automatic transmissions were also known to fail before 100,000 miles.

Electronics, including infotainment and suspension sensors, can be troublesome.

Despite these issues, enthusiasts argue that with a solid maintenance history and a budget for occasional repairs, the S6 offers a rare slice of Italian-engineered excitement. It's not a track monster or an M5 rival, but it delivers drama per dollar that few cars can match. For those willing to take the risk, it's a loud bargain in the parking lot, especially with an aftermarket exhaust.
