The 2026 Subaru WRX Proves You Don’t Need to Spend Big for Big Fun

The 2026 Subaru WRX Proves You Don’t Need to Spend Big for Big Fun

Every great driving story begins with a great road. For the 2026 Subaru WRX, that road wound through the Welsh countryside, narrow, twisting, and barely wide enough for the car’s wing mirrors to brush the hedgerows. Over two days, I hammered the throttle, hoping no tractor appeared around the next blind bend, as the exhaust note bounced off the hills.

Subaru brought me here to make one thing clear: you don’t need a six-figure sports car to have an unforgettable drive. This rejuvenated WRX, starting at $32,495 plus destination, keeps the price under $35,000, roughly what the 2002 model cost adjusted for inflation. In a market where affordable performance is vanishing, this car stands out.

4-liter boxer-four making 271 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque, paired with a six-speed manual and all-wheel drive. On Wales’s narrow B-roads, the engine happily danced between second and third gear. The suspension is soft enough to absorb crumbling pavement and sudden dips, keeping the tires glued to the tarmac.

5:1 ratio, isn’t as quick as a Toyota GR Corolla’s, but its progressive weighting makes turn-in predictable and easy. On track at Oulton Park, the stock brakes faded after a few fast laps, but a set of race pads would fix that. This car is a fantastic base for anyone wanting to build a track-day weapon without breaking the bank.

Inside, the cabin is no-nonsense. The best feature is the manual gear lever, something you can’t get in a Volkswagen GTI anymore. Cloth seats with red stitching, a leather-wrapped wheel, and metal pedals keep things businesslike. 6-inch touchscreen is big and bright, but response times lag behind newer systems.

Exterior styling carries over from the previous generation, with the signature hood scoop and honeycomb grille looking sharp in WR Blue, though the plastic wheel-arch cladding still divides opinions. Compared to rivals like the Honda Civic Si, Hyundai Elantra N, or GR Corolla, the WRX offers more power, all-weather capability, and a lower starting price.

It may not be the sharpest track tool out of the box, but for under $35,000, it’s the most engaging, honest sports sedan you can buy. After two days of driving across Wales and down to the Goodwood Festival of Speed, I fell a little in love with this humble Scooby. Good roads, great cars, here’s to more stories like that.
