The 2026 Subaru WRX Base Proves You Don't Need to Spend Big for Big Fun

The 2026 Subaru WRX Base Proves You Don't Need to Spend Big for Big Fun

When Subaru invited me to fly to the UK, test the new base-model 2026 WRX on a track, visit Jeremy Clarkson's pub, and watch Travis Pastrana launch the Brataroo up the Goodwood hill, I didn't hesitate. It's like asking a dog if they want to go for a walk, the answer is an enthusiastic yes.

My first trip to Britain kicked off the moment I landed in Manchester, groggy from jet lag, and was whisked to Oulton Park racing circuit to see what a $33,690 WRX could do on tarmac.

4-liter Boxer four-cylinder engine as the rest of the lineup, delivering 271 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque through a six-speed manual transmission to all four wheels. On the track, the car impressed with strong grip from its standard Dunlop Sportmaxx GT tires, though the steering could be more communicative and understeer appears if you push too hard into corners.

The biggest letdown? The brakes. Higher trims get Brembo six-piston calipers, but the base model's standard brakes fade after a few hot laps. Still, for the price, this car holds its own against far more expensive machinery.

Off the track, the WRX Base shines as a daily driver. The manual transmission is a joy, with a light clutch and hill-hold assist that makes stop-and-go traffic painless. The suspension is firm but not punishing, and the air conditioning is ice-cold, a blessing during muggy English summer days.

Fuel economy is the main drawback, rated at 19 mpg city and 26 highway with the manual, but that's a small price to pay for this level of engagement. 6-inch infotainment system with wireless phone mirroring, LED headlights, and Subaru's EyeSight safety suite. For $33,690 including destination, the WRX Base is the best value in the lineup, offering a playful, practical, and easily modifiable all-wheel-drive performance car that enthusiasts will love.
