The 2026 Range Rover Sport PHEV: A Jack of All Trades That Actually Works

The 2026 Range Rover Sport PHEV: A Jack of All Trades That Actually Works

Most luxury SUVs pick a lane. Some tackle corners like a sports car. Others wrap you in silence and leather. A few can actually handle a dirt road without drama. The 2026 Range Rover Sport PHEV tries to do all three at once. On paper, that sounds like a recipe for mediocrity. But after a week behind the wheel, being nearly excellent at everything starts to feel like the bigger win.

Our tester, finished in Varesine Blue with a Caraway and Ebony interior, carried a $96,725 sticker. It’s a plug-in hybrid aimed at cutting fuel use without cutting luxury. In practice, it’s one of the most complete two-row SUVs on sale today.

The cabin is where that six-figure price makes sense. The Caraway leather warms the space, and the soft-touch materials feel genuinely premium. The dashboard is clean and simple, built to age well. The seats are comfortable on long hauls, though Range Rover’s unusual adjustment system for thigh support can frustrate.

The infotainment system takes some learning, but once you get it, it becomes intuitive. The surround-view cameras are sharp, and the side-screen controls are refreshingly straightforward. One clever touch: individual armrests on the front seats let you access the center storage without asking your passenger to move.

The biggest annoyance is the piano black trim, which attracts fingerprints on every surface you touch. Rear passengers get cushioned seats, climate controls, USB ports, and power adjustments. Cargo space is generous, and the strap-and-pop-up divider system is a simple, thoughtful touch.

Under the hood, the PHEV trades some V8 excitement for efficiency. It’s heavier and less thrilling when pushed, but it’s still quicker than most cars on the road. The ride is superb, smoothing out rough pavement better than anything short of a full-size Range Rover. In EV mode, it glides nearly silently through traffic, with an EPA-estimated 53 miles of electric range.

4 mpg over a week, though that number drops fast if the battery runs dry. Plugging in overnight became second nature. The suspension is the real star, delivering a blend of comfort and composure that few rivals match. It won’t out-handle a Porsche Cayenne or out-rock a Jeep Grand Cherokee, but it’ll handle a dirt road better than most competitors.

The biggest question for buyers isn’t the price—it’s Range Rover’s reliability reputation. But for those who want a luxury SUV that does nearly everything well, the 2026 Range Rover Sport PHEV makes a surprisingly strong case.
