The 1970 Firebird Formula 400: A Muscle Car That Kept a Low Profile

The 1970 Pontiac Firebird Formula 400 stands out in muscle car history for doing the opposite of what most performance cars of the era did: it stayed visually quiet while delivering serious power.
The second-generation Firebird was the first version Pontiac got to build on its own terms, after the first-gen had to share underpinnings with the Chevrolet Camaro. For 1970, the lineup included the base Firebird, the luxury-oriented Esprit, the Formula 400, and the range-topping Trans Am.
5-liter V8 rated at 330 horsepower, paired with a three-speed manual and a Hurst shifter. Buyers could also option the 345-hp Ram Air III engine from the Trans Am. The car featured heavy-duty suspension, stabilizer bars, front disc brakes, and upgraded tires. 5 seconds with the standard engine, or closer to six seconds with the Ram Air III.
Unlike the Trans Am, which wore racing stripes, spoilers, and aggressive air inlets, the Formula 400 looked nearly identical to lower models. Its only notable visual change was a hood with two functional air scoops. That restrained design made it something of a sleeper.
On the collector market, the Formula 400 remains affordable. According to Hagerty, good-condition examples with the standard V8 sell for around $26,000, with rougher cars under $15,000. Low-mileage concours versions top out near $70,000. Four-speed manuals add roughly $6,000, and Ram Air III cars in good condition fetch about $44,500, with concours examples worth around $90,000.
The Trans Am still commands a premium, costing about $6,000 more than a Ram Air III Formula 400 despite similar hardware. The rarest 1970 Firebirds are Trans Ams with the Ram Air IV V8, of which only 88 were built. Those produce 370 hp and can reach 60 mph in under six seconds, with good examples around $96,000 and mint ones exceeding $160,000.
For buyers who want the performance without the attention or the price tag, the Formula 400 offers a compelling alternative.
