German Automakers' Informal Speed Limit Agreement

German Automakers' Informal Speed Limit Agreement

An informal agreement among German automakers has been in place for over 40 years, electronically limiting their vehicles to 155 MPH. This agreement was made in response to pressure from Germany's Green Party to impose mandatory speed limits on the Autobahn. To avoid government intervention, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Audi voluntarily agreed to the limit.

As a result, many German performance cars have an electronic limiter that prevents them from exceeding 155 MPH, even if the engine is capable of going faster. Some models, such as certain BMWs, offer a Driver's Package that can unlock the car's true top speed. This self-imposed limit has been seen as a way to demonstrate industry responsibility and avoid external speed limits.

The agreement has had a lasting impact on the automotive industry and has helped keep the Autobahn unrestricted.
